Con Voi Hiếu Nghĩa

Ngày xưa ở xứ Ba La Nại có một vị Vua thường dẫn lính vào rừng săn bắn. Một hôm nhà Vua thấy một con voi trắng tuyệt đẹp, vua bắt về sai lính trông nom cẩn thận và lo cho ăn uống sung sướng. Nhưng kể từ khi bị bắt, voi chỉ khóc đầm đìa nước mắt và không chịu ăn uống gì cả.
Nhà Vua ngạc nhiên đến hỏi: "Tại sao mi không chịu ăn uống gì hết vậy?". Voi đáp: "Tâu bệ hạ, mẹ tôi bị mù lòa đang ở trong rừng sâu, không ai tìm thức ăn cho dưỡng nuôi, chắc chết mất. Thân tôi tuy ở đây được ăn uống sung sướng nhưng lòng luôn xót xa thương nhớ mẹ hiền, làm sao tôi nuốt trôi được".
Nhà Vua nghe voi nói vô cùng cảm động, liền ra lệnh thả voi về rừng với mẹ già.
Voi trắng hiếu thảo đó chính là tiền thân của Đức Phật Thích Ca.
The Pious Elephant
Once upon a time in Varanasi, there was a King who often led his soldiers into the forest to hunt. One day, the King saw a beautiful white elephant. He captured it and ordered his soldiers to take good care of it and feed it with the best food. But since being captured, the elephant only cried tears and refused to eat or drink anything.
The King was surprised and asked: "Why don't you eat or drink anything?" The elephant replied: "Your Majesty, my blind mother is in the deep forest, with no one to find food for her, she will surely die. Although my body is here with delicious food, my heart is deeply sorrowful and misses my mother, how can I swallow anything?".
Hearing the elephant's words, the King was deeply moved and immediately ordered the elephant to be released back to the forest with its old mother.
That pious white elephant was a former life of Shakyamuni Buddha.
